Loft Insulation

free loft insulation in Wales

25% of the heat lost from a house is lost through the roof.

That is a great waste of heat and a great waste of money.

Insulating your loft will save you a lot of money over the years, and save tons of carbon emmissions.

Is Loft Insulation in Wales free?

Grants are still available for loft insulation in Wales.

You may be able to get free loft insulation through the Great British Insulation Scheme. If you are applying for loft insulation on its own, the scheme usually prioritises smaller properties. Larger homes may be required to make a contribution.

Originally, the scheme funded only single insulation measures. However, from 15th May 2025, loft insulation can now be installed as a secondary measure. This means you could receive both loft insulation and cavity wall insulation together – completely free of charge.

The eligibility criteria are the same for all insulation types under the scheme.

How is free loft insulation in Wales funded?

The Green Levy

The funding is aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Gas and electricity companies in the UK are legally required to help cut carbon emissions through a government initiative called the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).

As part of this, energy suppliers must fund measures that improve energy efficiency in homes.

The money comes from a small charge on energy bills, known as the green levy — approximately 6% of gas bills and 11% of electricity bills.

These funds are then used to provide grants, including the Great British Insulation Scheme.

Although the insulation is free to the homeowner, the scheme is funded collectively through energy bills.

As a result of The Budget (26/11/25) this is going to be subject to change.

How is loft insulation installed?

laying loft insulation in Wales

We no longer use the old-style “itchy” insulation.

We use a modern, soft “quilt-style” insulation made by Knauf, which manufacturers describe as comfortable enough to lie on.

The insulation arrives in sealed bags, which are taken into your loft and opened there.

Installation process:

The first layer is laid between the joists
A second layer is laid across the joists at right angles
This creates a continuous thermal barrier and prevents heat escaping
The recommended insulation depth is 270mm300mm (12 inches).

Our technicians will also ensure proper ventilation within the loft.

Every loft is different, and things such as cables and lighting are taken into account based on the initial survey.

A typical semi-detached property takes less than two hours to insulate. All packaging is removed afterwards, and the area is left clean and tidy.

All of our installers are fully insured.

FAQs Loft Insulation in Wales

Rafter loft insulation

We do not install rafter (roof slope) insulation, for two main reasons:

Firstly, it doesn’t make practical sense. While it can reduce heat loss from the roof, it does not effectively retain heat in the main living areas below. Instead, it tends to heat the loft space itself.

Secondly, many rafter systems use spray foam insulation, which permanently bonds to the roof tiles. If a tile later leaks, the foam bond can make repairs extremely difficult and expensive.

We have seen real-life cases where this caused serious problems. In August 2016, a customer in Whitchurch, Cardiff had to have their entire roof replaced after water damage, at a cost of £7,000.

Loft insulation should save you money — not create costly future problems.
